In short the character is named Pippi Långstrump— but this depends on where you are from.

The stories have sold more than 40 million copies and generated numerous films and television series adaptations.

The stories have even been translated into more than 62 languages, including English, where the character’s name translates to Pippi Longstocking.

The story of Pippi Longstocking

The Pippi Longstocking story is a favorite among Swedish children.

When you move to Sweden with IntlMOVE, you can teach your children about Swedish culture by introducing them to the stories.

Nine-year-old Pippi Longstocking lived in a Swedish town along an orchard with her pet horse and monkey, Mr. Nilsson.

Her father, Captain Longstocking, bought Pippi the villa cottage so that she could have a stable home rather than a rugged life at sea.

Pippi and Captain Longstocking traveled the world together before he was lost at sea.

While everyone knew that the captain passed away, Pippi believed her father washed ashore and had become an island king somewhere.

So, there she lived in the cottage awaiting his return.

Pippi didn’t have many possessions, just a box full of gold coins and a huge chest with many drawers filled with various treasures she collected with her father on their travels.

She wore a tattered blue dress that she made herself, along with mismatched knee-high stockings and big shoes.

Although Pippi had bad manners and poor education, she was quite intelligent and had a pure heart.

She soon befriended two children, Tommy and Annika, who lived next door.

The three had many adventures together.

Pippi was always full of crazy ideas that would get them in-and-out of trouble.

Throughout their wild journeys each child remained safe because Pippi had extraordinary strength, which she inherited from her father.

As a young child she was known to be an extraordinary sailor who was far tougher than any of her father’s crewmates.

When Pippi wanted to ride her horse she commonly picked him up over the orchard’s fence with her bare hands.

In her adventures in the South Seas, the sharks and pirates proved to be no match for the strongest girl in the world.

Ironically, Pippi’s father, Captain Longstocking, washed ashore upon a South Sea island known as Kurrekurredutt Isle and was king among the native people.

The king eventually returned to Sweden to bring Pippi to the island.

However, she was attached to her home and friends so she continued to live in the villa cottage.

Pippi and her friends continued their adventures and took trips with King Longstocking, including one to Kurrekurredutt Isle where Pippi was named Princess Pippilotta.

Even though the Pippi Longstocking stories originated in Sweden, they have become popular worldwide.
