IntlMOVE can help your family get settled in Scotland by shipping your household goods and personal effects overseas.
When you need help from International Movers with years of experience, contact IntlMOVE.
IntlMOVE will take care of all your international moving needs.

When you are ready to relocate abroad, there are many decisions you need to consider.
Finding a new house is very important and you will want to find a house that is close to your job.
If you are moving to Scotland with children, you will also want to look at the schools that are located within the vicinity of your house.
Once you have chosen a place to live, IntlMOVE will ship your household goods and personal effects overseas and deliver them to your new home.

The school your children will attend is determined by the location of your house, otherwise known as your “Catchment Area.”
If you would rather your children attend a school in a different Catchment Area, you can apply for a placing request.
There is no guarantee that the other schools will accept your children because there are often limited spaces for children who want to go to schools outside of their assigned locations.

Scottish schools are different from schools in other parts of the United Kingdom.
The Scottish school system offers more courses in a wider variety of subjects, while other schools in the United Kingdom focus more on core subjects.
When your children attend a university, they will go for four years whereas they will attend a university for three years elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

Most of the public schools in Scotland have no religious affiliation, but there is one Jewish primary school and some Roman Catholic state schools that are funded by the Scottish Government.
The Roman Catholic Church of Scotland presides over some decisions made in these schools with Catholic affiliation.
The Roman Catholic Church of Scotland also appoints a chaplain at each of these schools.

Educational standards are monitored and audited by three different governing bodies.
The standards for pre-schools are inspected by the Care Commission.
Pre-schools, primary schools and further education are regulated and inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education.
The Scottish Office of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA Scotland) is responsible for auditing and managing higher education.

In Scotland, children start primary school between the ages of 4 ½ and 5 ½.
Children attend primary school for seven years and begin secondary school between the ages of 11 and 12.
When students are between the ages of 15 and 16, they are required to take an intermediate exam that consists of about eight core subjects.
Secondary school is mandatory for four years, but students can stay for an additional two years after they complete their standard grades.
If children want to further their education and go on to college, they must attend a fifth year of secondary school.
Most children who go on to universities stay for a sixth year of secondary school.
The sixth year is almost always mandatory for students who want to attend English universities of if they want to study law or medicine.

International schools and some private schools have different levels and schedules for education.
If you are moving overseas for a new job, some companies will put education expenses for your children in your corporate relocation package.
Determine your budget for school and what is important to you for your children’s education.
Research which schools you want your children to attend and choose a home that is close to your top school of choice.
When you have chosen your new home, let IntlMOVE help move your household goods and personal effects overseas so you can begin your new life in Scotland.

Thank You IntlMOVE

You would think that communicating with the residents of England would be easy because they speak your native tongue.
Although they speak the same language, there are still many differences in British English and American English.

General Terms
Although the British might refer to you as their friend, they might also call you their mate which is the exact same thing.
If you are going on vacation, you will tell your British friends that you are on holiday.
You will take a walk on the pavement instead of the sidewalk.
If someone is pissed, they are not angry, but they are drunk.
If you need directions to a bathroom, don’t ask someone where the bathroom is because they will think you want to take a bath.
Instead ask for directions to the toilet, water closet (WC for short) or the loo.
Standing in line is the same thing as standing in queue.

Babies
When you change a baby’s diaper, you will be changing their nappy.
When the baby won’t stop crying, you will give them a dummy instead of a pacifier.

Clothing
Underwear or panties are often referred to as knickers.
The British say trousers instead of pants and pullover or jumper instead of sweater.
If you are going to the gym, you will grab your plimsolls or trainers instead of your gym shoes.
After a nice, luxurious bath, you will put on your dressing gown instead of your robe.

Around the House
When you have lunch in the garden, you will not be eating amongst growing vegetables, but you will be in the backyard or yard.
A closet is either referred to as a cupboard or a wardrobe.
People throw their garbage out in bins or dust bins.
A sitting room, living room, lounge or drawing room all refer to what Americans call a living room.
When your lights go out you will want to reach for a torch, which is known as a flashlight in American English.

At Work
When you are writing with a pencil and make a mistake, you will not use an eraser, but refer to it as a rubber.
If you are off task or goofing off, your British boss might tell you to, “Stop mucking around!”

Cars
Instead of driving on the freeway, you will be driving on a motorway.
When you stop for gas, you will be stopping for petrol at the petrol station.
If you need to park your car, you will not look for a parking lot but you will instead look for a car park.
A lorry is a truck and an articulated lorry is a tractor trailer.
An estate car is just your average station wagon.
The hood of your car is referred to as the bonnet and the trunk is referred to as the boot.
The windscreen is the windshield and a number plate is a license plate.
An aerial is actually a car’s antenna.

Food
When you want to order take out, you will instead use the phrase take-away.
When ordering chips off of a menu, be aware that you will get a plate full of French fries.
If you are looking for the types of chips that come in a bag, you will want to ask for crisps.
When you need to satiate your sweet tooth, you will not ask for a cookie, but instead ask for a biscuit.
A famous British dish is bangers and mash, which translates to sausage and potatoes.
If you want French toast and a slice of bacon, you will order eggy bread and a rasher.
Instead of saying that food is spoiled, you will say it’s gone off.

There are a lot of subtle differences in British English and American English, but soon enough you will catch on!
Good luck on your move to the United Kingdom!

Moving to the United Kingdom will offer you and your family different cultural experiences that will be remembered for a lifetime.

England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are four countries that together from the United Kingdom (UK).
There are over 61 million people who reside in these four countries.

London is the capital city of the UK, and it is also the capital of England.
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and Cardiff is the capital of Wales.

Although separately the people of each country are referred to as English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh, the people of the UK are also referred to as British.

History and Culture
The UK has a fascinating history filled with art, culture, famous battles and beautiful architecture.
Shakespeare, Darwin, the Beatles and JK Rowling, the author of Harry Potter Books, were all born in the United Kingdom.
One of the most famous attractions, Big Ben, does not actually refer to the clock.
It refers to the 13-ton bell that resides in St. Stephen’s Tower.

You can visit many castles throughout the UK, and many of them have rich and colorful histories.
Each castle has a unique charm because no two castles were ever built the same because of the landscape, the designer and the materials that were available in that region during the time of the castle’s construction.
The largest castle in England is Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace was built on the site of a famous brothel in 1702.
Many castles were built for defense purposes, but the first castle in the UK built for this reason was Ravenscraig Castle which was constructed in 1460 in Scotland.

Tea Drinking
Every day 165 million cups of tea are consumed in Britain.
Having tea often refers to more than just the beverage.
Teatime sometimes refers to a meal and it could consist of a light snack or a full dinner depending on who you are talking to and what region of the UK you are visiting.
During the workday, there are often tea breaks where tea and a light snack are eaten.

Afternoon tea is usually served between four and five in the afternoon is a light meal.
Cucumber sandwiches, salmon sandwiches, scones, crumpets, pastries and Victoria sponge cakes are often served during afternoon tea.

A more substantial meal usually follows and is referred to as dinner.
Tea is also referred to as the main evening meal, but mostly in working class areas.
Meats, stews and heartier meals are consumed along with tea.
When tea is served as an evening meal, lunchtime is referred to as dinner.

British Cuisine
When enjoying tea, you might be served a crumpet which is always toasted.
Crumpets are about the same size as English muffins, but are flat with holes on the top side that allow for butter or jam to melt down through the crumpet.
Although each country in the UK has local favorites, there are some commonalities.
The staple foods are meat, potatoes, butter, eggs, flour and fish.
Some British favorites include sandwiches, fish and chips, wild game and roast beef.
The meat generally enjoyed is beef, lamb, pork and chicken and it is usually served with potatoes and other vegetables.
